16. An-Nahl "The Bee" — Ayah 8
وَٱلْخَيْلَ وَٱلْبِغَالَ وَٱلْحَمِيرَ لِتَرْكَبُوهَا وَزِينَةًۭ ۚ وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.
Question

when it say He creates that which you do not know - what is it referring to?

Answer

The phrase "and He creates that which you do not know" (وَيَخْلُقُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ) in Surah An-Nahl (16:8) refers to creations beyond human knowledge, both those existing at the time of revelation and those yet to be discovered or understood.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir for 16:8 states that the preceding part of the verse details animals created for riding and adornment (horses, mules, donkeys), implying these are known benefits. The subsequent phrase then broadens this scope. This is consistent with other verses highlighting Allah's vast creation, such as 16:12, which mentions the varying colors and forms on earth as "proofs for people who understand" and "signs for people who reflect," encompassing diverse animals, minerals, and plants. Similarly, 16:10 describes the diverse growth from water as a "sign for people who give thought."

The linguistic structure, using the indefinite pronoun "مَا" (what/that which) and the present tense verb "تَعْلَمُونَ" (you know), suggests an ongoing or open-ended reality, encompassing both the unknown at present and potentially future discoveries.

In essence, this phrase underscores Allah's infinite creative power, extending far beyond human comprehension or present knowledge, serving as a sign for those who reflect upon His blessings and might (16:12, 16:14).
